GIFs push limits of art and processors

GIFs as Art--
Mind-bending GIFs push the limits of art and processors | The Verge: "Nowadays, the word "GIF" has become all but synonymous with the frivolous and whimsical, but Croatian Paolo Čerić is proving that there's more to the medium than just cats and LOLs. Čerić, 22, is currently studying at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Zagreb, where he experiments with new ways to create art from code. His animations, published to his Patakk Tumblr, are equal parts mesmerizing and perplexing — complex geometric formations that undulate and pulsate across the page. Čerić tells Colossal that he began experimenting with the GIF format two years ago, when he was a relative novice. He began by imitating other animations he'd seen on the web, but soon developed his own style, which now ranges from the abstract to the pop-infused. He's not the only one testing the artistic boundaries of GIF media, but his experiments are certainly among the most compelling. . . ."

Photos from Twitter

News flash for the media: you can’t sell photos grabbed from Twitter | Ars Technica: "It's become common for news agencies to feature all kinds of content found on Twitter in their articles and broadcasts. But this ruling suggests what behavior is clearly out of bounds. Distributing photos on a commercial basis—with an incorrect byline to boot—evidently falls in that category. Joseph Baio, Morel's lawyer, told Reuters today that the case showed commercial news use of Twitter photos is illegal, and the trial will determine what the consequences should be. Twitter was never a party to the case. A Twitter spokesman asked about the case today simply reiterated the company's policy, that "Twitter users own their photos.""

Pixel Counts Don’t Count in Cameras

Why Pixel Counts Don’t Count in Cameras
" . . . The point here is that when you are shopping for a camera, concentrate on the type and physical dimensions of the sensor. In that case, larger is better because more surface area means more ability to capture light. And though CCD sensors used to be state-of-the-art, CMOS sensors have largely surpassed them. . . . "

Sam Falls and Problems With Decomposition

But digital is forever--

Bookshelf | Sam Falls's 'Problems With Decomposition' - NYTimes.com: "The Los Angeles-based artist Sam Falls, 28, delights in the process of deterioration. Straddling sculpture, painting and photography, he has spent the last few years investigating the long-term effects of sunlight, time and natural decomposition on materials like paper, steel and cloth, creating works as interesting for their process as much as for their finished state. Take “Light Work,” for instance, a book filled with colored paper left to fade on Falls’s studio windowsill, or a colorful sculpture, coated in non-UV-protected pigment so as to physically absorb the movement of the sun over time. The results are frequently messy, but purposefully so. “None of my work is picture-perfect,” Falls says. “It’s muddied and filled with aspects of failure. That way it’s often easier to understand.”. . ."

How the Internet is becoming an artistic medium | Arts and Culture | Idahostatesman.com: "In late 2012, he decided to take his Web inspiration seriously and dedicate himself to making one piece of art every day. Krueger auctions off his “Daily Dose of Painting,” a series of 5-by-7-inch still lifes he whips up in a couple hours, at GeoffreyKrueger.com. Bids start at $100. What he sells notwithstanding, the bigger payoff is less tangible, he says. Taking this small risk pushed him out of his comfort zone, loosened his style and now is beginning to influence his larger work."

There Is No Digital Media, Only Software

Dead Media Beat: Lev Manovich, "There Is No Digital Media, There Is Only Software" | Beyond The Beyond | Wired.com“It is important to make it clear that I am not saying that today all the differences between different media types – continuous tone images, vector images, simple text, formatted text, 3D models, animations, video, maps, music, etc. – are completely determined by application software. Obviously, these media types have different representational and expressive capabilities; they can produce different emotional effects; they are processed by different sensors and networks of neurons in the brain; and they are likely to correspond to different types of mental processes and mental representations. These differences have been discussed for thousands of years – from ancient philosophy and classical aesthetic theory to modern art and contemporary neuroscience. “What I am arguing is something else. On the one hand, interactive software adds a new set of operations which can be applied to all these media types – which we as users experience as their new ‘properties’. (The examples include separation between data structure and its display, hyperlinking, visualization, and search interface.) On the other hand, the ‘properties’ of a particular media type can vary dramatically depending on the software application used for its authoring and access. Let’s go though one example in detail. “As the example of media type, we will use a photograph. In the analog era, once a photograph was printed, all the information was ‘fixed’. Looking at this photograph at home, in an exhibition, or in a book did not affect this information. Certainly, a photographer could produce a different print with a higher or a lower contrast or use a different paper – but this resulted in a physically different object, i.e., a new photographic print that contained different information. (For example, some details were lost if the contrast was increased.) “So what happens with a digital photograph? We can take a photo with a dedicated digital camera or capture it with a mobile phone, or scan it from an old book. In every case, we end with a file that contains an array of pixels which hold color values, and a file header that specifies image dimensions, color profile, information about the camera and shot conditions such as exposure, and other metadata. In other words, we end up with what is normally called ‘digital media’ – a file containing numbers which represent the details of some scene or an object. . . ."

What We Did Before Photoshop

A look back--

What Did We Do Before Photoshop? | Art Beat | PBS NewsHour | PBS: "Next, we turn to the work of modern artists, including Herbert Bayer, Maurice Tabard and Dora Maar, who have used photography to evoke subjective states of mind, conjuring dreamlike scenarios and surreal imaginary worlds, in which women morph into cats and eyes stare from the walls of empty rooms. The final section presents photographs from the second half of the 20th century by Jerry Uelsmann,Duane Michals, John Baldessari and other artists who have adapted earlier tropes and techniques of image manipulation -- spirit photography, composite portraiture, news-photo retouching -- to create works that self-consciously and often humorously highlight the inherent mutability of the photographic image. Are there any manipulations that can't be done in Photoshop or don't look as good? MIA FINEMAN: Not really. The only case I can think of would be an artist or designer who wants the rough, handmade look of cut-and-paste collage with the seams showing. But maybe even that can be simulated digitally. One of the major differences between manipulation in the darkroom and manipulation with Photoshop is time and physical effort -- the click of a mouse vs. exposure and developing, not to mention the mixing of chemicals and wasted sheets of photographic paper. Which is to say that there was a certain amount of craft and patience one had to possess in the darkroom that is much different than using a computer. Do you think this cheapens modern manipulation when used in fine art, because it's so easy to do now? MIA FINEMAN: No. Photographers have always used whatever technical means were available to them to create the pictures they wanted to create -- Photoshop is the latest tool. That said, I do think there's a tendency among some contemporary image-makers to overuse digital tools and effects -- but it's mostly a matter of taste. . . Nearly every photographer engaged in some form of image manipulation at some point, even "straight" photographers like Paul Strand and Ansel Adams -- they just didn't talk about it. Editor's note: "Faking It: Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop" will be at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York through Jan. 27, 2013, and is complemented by an exhibition catalog authored by Mia Fineman. . . .
