Annie Leibovitz on the future of photography - Cannes Lions 2013 video

Annie Leibovitz on the future of photography - Cannes Lions 2013 video | Media | guardian.co.uk: "Annie Leibovitz discusses the role of the professional photographer in an era dominated by smartphone cameras and image-sharing sites. Speaking at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, Leibovitz argues that there is no reason to suppose that there will be any let-up in demand for high-quality stills photography"

Mind-Boggling 2-D (or 3-D?) Art Photographer

The Mind-Boggling 2-D (or 3-D?) Art Photographer - The Cut: "For Bela Borsodi, a photographer known for injecting craftiness into his fashion and still-life work, the field in which he gained prominence was not necessarily his first choice. "I never woke up one morning and said, 'I want to be a photographer,'" he told the Cut. "Still, up to today, it’s just circumstance that it was photography." But considering that his grandfather was, according to Borsodi, the man who brought color film into Austria in the fifties, it appears photography was in his blood. . . ."Photography’s all about cheating," he said to the Cut. "You invent things, even if you claim that they’re real, realistic, that there’s a real experience with it, but in the end, it’s a photograph. It’s the documentation, the proof of an actual experience." The Cut sat down with Borsodi to talk about his creative process and delve deeper into his layered understanding of the medium." Post-process: why the smartphone camera changed photography

Post-process: why the smartphone camera changed photography ...
I am a professional commercial photographer. I have been for the last 25 years. Throughout most of my career, I've had a hard time taking personal pictures ...Love it or loathe it (I love it), Instagram has fundamentally changed a great many perceptions of photography, not just my own. This is because Instagram lives on the devices that the vast majority of us are using to take the photos we share. It has fused the act of taking pictures with the act of viewing and sharing pictures. As a result, Instagram created one seamless user experience: Shoot, process, share, view, like, comment, shoot, process, share. Repeat. This process is now both ubiquitous, and a badge of honor. Users proudly tout “iPhone Only” on their profiles to distinguish themselves from those now using regular digital cameras — which many Instagram purists view as “cheating.” (read more at following link)

Improving Photo Search

Improving Photo Search: A Step Across the Semantic Gap: "Last month at Google I/O, we showed a major upgrade to the photos experience: you can now easily search your own photos without having to manually label each and every one of them. This is powered by computer vision and machine learning technology, which uses the visual content of an image to generate searchable tags for photos combined with other sources like text tags and EXIF metadata to enable search across thousands of concepts like a flower, food, car, jet ski, or turtle. For many years Google has offered Image Search over web images; however, searching across photos represents a difficult new challenge. In Image Search there are many pieces of information which can be used for ranking images, for example text from the web or the image filename. However, in the case of photos, there is typically little or no information beyond the pixels in the images themselves. This makes it harder for a computer to identify and categorize what is in a photo. There are some things a computer can do well, like recognize rigid objects and handwritten digits. For other classes of objects, this is a daunting task, because the average toddler is better at understanding what is in a photo than the world’s most powerful computers running state of the art algorithms. . . ." Bell Labs Invents Lensless Camera

Bell Labs Invents Lensless Camera | MIT Technology Review: "Today, this revolution gains pace because Gang Huang and pals from Bell Labs in New Jersey say they’ve used compressive sensing to build a camera that needs no lens and uses only a single sensing pixel to take photographs. Chicago Sun-Times to train reporters on iPhone photography basics

Chicago Sun-Times will train reporters on ‘iPhone photography basics’ | Poynter.: "After letting go of its entire photo staff Thursday, the Chicago Sun-Times plans to begin mandatory training on “iPhone photography basics.” Media writer Robert Feder referred to the training in a Facebook post, and quotes a memo from Editor Craig Newman: “In the coming days and weeks, we’ll be working with all editorial employees to train and outfit you as much as possible to produce the content we need.”"

Slide Show: Ilona Szwarc's American Girls : The New Yorker: "Over the past two years, Ilona Szwarc has documented over a hundred girls and their American Girl dolls. Ilona first encountered the American Girl phenomenon while photographing the streets of New York. “I kept noticing girls walking around with their look-alike dolls,” she told me. “Initially, I was very drawn to this beautiful image of a little girl with her mini-twin.” The franchise began with a handful of dolls (the names Samantha, Addie, Kirsten, Molly may ring a bell with fellow-millennials) styled after different periods of American history. In 1995, the line was expanded to include more contemporary models, and introduced the popular option to customize the hair and skin color of the doll."

'That Tree': Photographer Mark Hirsch Becomes One With An Oak Tree In Lovely Documentary Project (PHOTOS): "Mark Hirsch, a 52-year-old photojournalist based out of Dubuque, Iowa, has formed an unlikely attachment to a tree. The attachment is so strong, in fact, that he's spent the last year photographing it, venturing out to this lone oak each day to capture a unique snapshot of his photosynthetic friend."

Magic Lantern brings the gift of Raw video to Canon 50D: "This comes in the wake of Magic Lantern first getting Raw video out of a Canon 5D Mark III, and since then the functionality has spread to a number of other Canon DSLRs. What makes the case of the Canon 50D special is that unlike other Canon cameras that have been overhauled with Magic Lantern's software enhancements, it never had video to begin with — and now it can not only shoot video footage, but can do it in Raw, too."
